Induction of New Staff

Welcome to Sumner Health Centre

Thank you for choosing to work at Sumner Health Centre, we hope you will be happy here and enjoy working with us.

This quick guide is to assist with some basic housekeeping which should help you to fit in with the team a little faster.

Policies

Our policies form a guide to how we do things, and also help us to fulfil our legal obligations both to our patients and to you.  All of them are important and over time, you will need to become familiar with them.

Policies can be found here:  Sumner Health Centre Policy List

We understand that your time is precious so please ensure that you are familiar with our most important policies first:

Health and Safety at work policy

Fire Action Policy

Child protection policy

Complaints policy

Clinical staff should also ensure that they read these documents first:

Data Standards

Recall policy - This is particularly important as our way of managing recalls is somewhat different from many other practices.

Results Management Policy

Sensitive Results Policy

Leave

When you are ready to take leave, please complete a leave request form at reception.  We cannot guarantee that everyone will be able to get the leave they request but will do our best.

In general we appreciate leave requests being made between six and twelve weeks in advance of the leave being required.  Please bear in mind that preference for popular leave times will not be granted on a first come first served basis and instead will reflec the needs of the practice and those of other staff who may also wish to take time off.  We routinely close for the entirety of the Christmas and New Year period so staff will need to keep 3 days of annual leave to cover this time.

If you need leave at short notice, or are unable to work due to sickness, it is very important that you speak in person to someone who can acknowledge your absence and make arrangements.  This will generally be the duty receptionist or the Clinical Director.  A message, whether txt, email or other is not sufficient unless you get an acknowledgement.

Training

There are some compulsory staff training sessions for permanent staff.  Please discuss how to obtain this training with the Staffing Administrator.  If you feel you need other specific training to fulfil your role, this will generally be provided for you - please ask.

Fundamentals of Safeguarding and Child Protection (online course) - Link in Child protection Policy

Treaty of Waitangi or equivalent cultural competence course (Every 3 years)

Training on implementing the Health And Disability Code of Consumers' Rights (Every 3 years)

Cardiopulmonary Resusciation (CORE for clinical staff through 24 Hour Surgery; basic resus via St John for non-clinical staff)

Dress Code

Medical practices are relatively conservative places.

Clothing should be modest and appropriate to your role.

Clinical staff may wear scrubs if desired.

Personal jewllery and body decorations should not pose a hazard or be offensive to any widely recognised group of people.

Kitchen Etiquette

Butter, bread, some spreads, coffee and tea and milk are provided for staff.

If you bring something to share, please leave it on the worktop.  If you leave something on the worktop in the kitchen, others may assume it is for sharing.

Please do not assume food in the fridge is for sharing unless it is marked for sharing.

Please ensure that all dirty eating implements are placed in the dishwasher.  Last person in please set the dishwasher going.

There is a tub for recycling food scraps - last person to leave please empty this into the Green bin and place tub in the dishwasher.

As usual with shared spaces, please clean up after yourself.
